Want to park at a meter in downtown Chicago? That will be 14 quarters, please. It's now 14 quarters per hour, or 4.28 minutes per quarter as of February 25, 2009.

That's over half a roll of quarters to park for 2 hours, or 0.35 pounds of metal.

And did I mention that the city's coffers will not see a single dime (or quarter) of that money, as our parking meters were all privatized last month with nearly no debate, just like with the city-owned garages downtown, the Chicago Skyway, and if the Mayor has his way, Midway Airport.

If you live elsewhere in the city, you can share in the fun too, as your rates have quadrupled. Most neighborhoods that used to get an hour for only one shiny quarter can now start ponying up 4. And make sure you start feeding it on Sunday too!
