After almost 3 years, the time has come to phase out this blog and site. I've now migrated to a new site at chrispZERO.com, complete with a new blog at http://chrispzero.com/blog/. The new blog will often carry the same format as this one, featuring a photo, or sometimes a video. But it will sometimes contain an array of photos from any given shoot or about any topic. It will also allow for more thorough entries about my travels, experiences, and workflow.

This site never reached its potential since I did not have the time to devote to it - it has seen few updates aside from this Featured photoblog. The new site will have a different focus and will hopefully be much better maintained. So, please, come check it out.

I will continue to leave this site intact for posterity for the foreseeable future. Thanks for all the support!

Welcome to the Salton Sea

The Salton Sea, California's largest lake, and one of its weirdest places.

At one point, the Salton Sea was a busy resort area - home to multiple yacht clubs, countless water recreation activities, country clubs, a thriving fishery. These days, things are much different. A strong sulfuric smell fills the air. As you walk toward the shore, what first looks like sand reveals that it is actually an endless number of shells, dead barnicles, and dried, brittle fish bones covering the dirt. If you can overcome the smell and get close to the shore, thousands of dead fish from the endless fish kills become evident, baking in the hot desert sun. The surrounding towns and structures are mostly abandoned, with empty lots and overgrown streets abounding in Salton City. The thriving tourist destination was killed by a series of floods decades ago, and now the sea itself is slowly dying. The sea has no outflow, and its only inflow is agriculture runoff. It becomes saltier by the year, as well as receiving a healthy dose of pesticides and phosphates, and has frequent large algal blooms. Soon, it will be unable to support fish life due to increased salinity, killing the still thriving migratory bird haven, and without significant help, it will continue to slowly recede.

The Salton Sea, its surrounding areas, and remaining residents and other interests all provide a very interesting, very unique, and very weird dynamic. If you don't mind holding your nose for a few hours and aren't prone to headaches, it is definitely a recommended visit.
